About the project

HURISA is a member of a coalition of NGOs monitoring implementation of 14 African Union Instruments. The Coalition was formed in 2009, as a result of a Continental Advisory Research Team (CART) with the view of carrying out research studies to monitor compliance of the African Union Member States with their regional obligations. The first phase of the project consisted of tracking 10 countries, including South Africa with twelve African Union instruments. The project was initially coordinated by Southern Africa Trust and conducted research on South Africa jointly with HURISA. A continental report was compiled from the 10 country reports and published during the 2010 African Union Summit in Kampala. The launch of the report led to the formation of a five year project named the State of the Union Coalition (SoTU).
